About the Artist
Herb Moses, of Ewing New Jersey, was born on July 22, 1929 in Hartford Connecticut and died on May 24, 2011 at the age of 81. He was an accomplished artist winning his first artistic award of $5 at the age of 8 in a contest sponsored by the Hartford Courant. His early works were in water color and oils. Later he used acrylics. He was most recognized for his unique style of colorful three dimensional geometric paintings, a blending of his scientific and artistic talents. Herb Moses had 19 one-man shows and was a frequent exhibitor in the Ward-Nasse and Amos Eno Galleries in New York’s Soho district. His work, Shadows Over the Moon, was selected for a TAWA exchange program to Russia where it was exhibited in Moscow. His paintings are owned by over 70 private collectors in twelve states and six countries. They appear in the permanent collections of the New Jersey State Museum, The University of Connecticut, The College of New Jersey, and the Trenton Jewish Community Center.
Dr. Herbert A. Moses was equally involved in the science world and was Professor Emeritus of Physics at the College of New Jersey. Dr. Moses received his BS and MS degrees in physics from Michigan State University and his PhD from the University of Connecticut. He taught both graduate and undergraduate classes during his 32 years at The College of New Jersey. Dr. Moses was a theoretical physicist concentrating on high energy physics, atomic scattering, and nuclear magnetic resonance. He produced many of his papers in conjunction with Dr. P.L. Jain at the University of Buffalo.
Those who knew him as Herb Moses the artist were amazed to learn he was an actively engaged research physicist and admired educator. Conversely, those who knew Dr. Moses as a physics professor could not picture him as an artist. What they did not know was that for sixty years he battled with Multiple Sclerosis, a progressive and debilitating disease that he chose to disregard. He had tremendous will power and drive to achieve and inspire others.
